His father was a shipbuilder who had the distinction of building the first screw steamer on the East coast. His mother's family had long been connected with whaling. He attended school until he was eighteen years old, when he entered the employ of his uncle, Charles Soper, as an apprentice machinist at his machine shop in New Bedford.

On November 11, 1868 he married Louisa A. Stafford of New Bedford; they had three children: Sperry G., Mary E., and Anna F. Germain G. Glidden was the author of numerous books on topics from mechanics to woodworking and from shipbuilding to whaling.
